Our Verdict on Citi Prestige Card

Citi Prestige Card is not for the occasional budget traveler. But for individuals who make frequent trips overseas, it is worth considering. One way to decide is to review how much you typically spend and find the right balance to maximize your air miles.

AMEX Singapore Airlines Krisflyer Ascend Card has a reasonable annual fee, generous enough perks, and rewards. AMEX, however, is not as widely accepted as Visa or Mastercard. Citi Prestige, on the other hand, is has a more expensive annual fee. Nonetheless, its perks and benefits are among the best on the market.

If you feel that Citi Prestige Card is not enough, then the best travel card for you is Standard Chartered Visa Infinite. For a little better perks and rewards, though, you do have to pay a higher annual fee.

Citi Prestige Is the Perfect Annual Travel Credit Card

Citibank’s Prestige Card is an excellent premium travel credit card. It is not for casual travelers due to the hefty annual fee. Nonetheless, it more than makes up by providing an enticing sign-up bonus. Even more impressive is the array of perks and rewards.

  • Each time you pay the annual fee, you receive 62,500 bonus points, equivalent to 25,000 miles.
  • Citi Prestige offers the fourth night free if you book four consecutive nights. You can avail of this benefit two times a year.
  • While the points per dollar are in the mid to mid-high range, earning points is nevertheless easy. And, you can use it to reduce or pay for merchandise from global brands, flight tickets, hotel rooms, car rental agencies, and other purchases.

Earning points (or air miles) is easy. All you need to do is to charge purchases to your Prestige card. However, these transactions need to qualify as eligible purchases. Also, note that you may need to book flights and hotel accommodation through the Citi Prestige Concierge to earn points.

Another way to earn points is to make payments using Citi PayAll Android or iOS app. Apart from earning miles, you may also receive cashback. Eligible transactions include but most certainly are not limited to:

  • Taxes such as income, property, and others
  • Insurance premiums
  • Rental deposits and monthly payments
  • Education expenses such as tuition and other school fees

Generally, you round down the transaction amount to the nearest S$1, multiply it by 3.25% (local) or 5% (overseas), then round to the nearest whole number.

Awarding points for every S$1 matters because many other banks give points every S$5. In essence, you lose fewer points this way. Take S$9.99 as an example. You earn 11.6 miles instead of only 6 miles.

To redeem ThankYou points, visit the Citi ThankYou Rewards website. You can use points to claim gift cards, hotel stays, flights, cars, cruises, cash rewards, and more.

As an option, you can also pay with points through Citibank Online or the Citi Mobile app. Essentially, you reduce your balance by exchanging points or miles for a statement credit to pay for recent purchases.

For a complete list of ineligible transactions, please review Citi ThankYou Points Exclusion Terms and Conditions.

Here are the highlights of the exclusions to give you a rough idea:

  • Quasi cash/financial Services (MCC 6529-6540)
  • Education institutions (MCC 8211-8299)
  • Professional services and membership organizations (MCC 8651-8661)
  • Government services (MCC 9000-9999)

No doubt the Citi Prestige is an excellent annual travel credit card, having many airline partners. Cathay Pacific’s Asia Miles and Air France/KLM’s Flying Blue loyalty programs are popular. While not the best, they are better ones.

To maximize your ThankYou points, redeem them from these airline loyalty programs:

  • Avianca LifeMiles
  • Singapore Airlines’ own KrisFlyer
  • Etihad Airways’ Etihad Guest
  • Virgin Atlantic’s Flying Club

No. As long as you remain a cardholder, the ThankYou points you earned do not expire. However, if you are to close your account, you will have 30 days to redeem points before they expire.

Consumers should always review the terms and conditions of any contract before signing. Learn more about how to resolve common disputes by reading the full chargeback and dispute resolution FAQs by Citibank.
